چکیده

Whether it be at a party or at a tavern or while being examined by a physician, on announcing that you are a mathematician, you are likely to be greeted with comments about your companion’s failure in high school math, or a request for a brief account of the proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, or perhaps an offer of a counterexample to the Four Color Theorem. Your parents, your friends and relatives, airplane seatmates, or your dean or provost are not likely to be mathematicians, and they too would like to know what you do, preferably in bite-sized pieces. Might we provide an everyday description that has sufficient technical detail so that a mathematician would recognize the work as real research mathematics? I suggest that if we think of mathematical work as showing that what might seem arbitrary is actually necessary, as analyzing everyday notions, as calculation, and as analogizing—using rich examples of mathematical work itself, we might be able to say a bit more about some of what mathematicians do. None of these descriptions are easy, but I think they connect better with the work of other people, so that they might see our work and their own as having some shared features.

Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for dermatologists: What shall we do when we don’t know what to do?

What shall we do when we have done everything we could for the diagnosis and treatment of a patient, but were not successful? What shall we do when there is no definite treatment for a patient? What shall we do when we have no diagnosis or treatment for a patient? Some useful suggestions are presented here to get rid of these situations.

What Branching Spacetime Might Do for Physics

In recent years, the branching spacetime (BST) interpretation of quantum mechanics has come under study by a number of philosophers, physicists and mathematicians. This paper points out some implications of the BST interpretation for two areas of quantum physics: (1) quantum gravity, and (2) stochastic interpretations of quantum mechanics.

Learning from Liu Hui? A Different Way to Do Mathematics, Volume 49, Number 7

C ould we have done mathematics differently? At a logical level this question is trivial: research mathematicians spend their time exploring all the ways one can “do it differently” and then doing them. There are no signs that the mathematical enterprise has any artificial barriers round it that stand in the way of this task. But my question refers to something a little less foundational. What ...

What is the Smallest Prime?

What is the first prime? It seems that the number two should be the obvious answer, and today it is, but it was not always so. There were times when and mathematicians for whom the numbers one and three were acceptable answers. To find the first prime, we must also know what the first positive integer is. Surprisingly, with the definitions used at various times throughout history, one was often...
